Kenneth L. Hughes, 83, of Eau Claire, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at Berrien Center Bible Church, with Reverend Maynard Schoen officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles. Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Bowerman Funeral Home in Eau Claire. Ken was born September 29, 1932, in Bangor, Michigan, to his proud parents, Kenneth Harold and Florence Mae (Simmons) Hughes. He married the love of his life, Virginia E. Herter, on June 25, 1960, and they celebrated 56 wonderful years on June 25, 2016. He was a member of Berrien Center Bible Church for over 20 years.

He retired from the Michigan Army National Guard in 1992 after 30 years of service. He served with the 1st Battalion 246 Armor Hq in Dowagiac his whole military career, with the Bn maintenance section as a 915A, and as the full time shop chief for OMS #15.  His awards included Michigan Broadsword, Meritorious Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon, NCO Development Ribbon w/3, Army Achievement Ribbon, Legion of Merit.

Ken was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth H. Hughes; parents, Kenneth and Florence Hughes; and a sister, Delores Hughes Kling.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Karen Mae (Ronald) Thran of Dowagiac; and granddaughters Heidi Thran of Dowagiac and Ginny Lyn Hughes of Battle Creek.
