Berrien Center

Gale L. Houseworth, a cherished patriarch, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024, at the age of 78 in St. Joseph, Michigan, close to his birthplace of Benton Harbor. Gale's journey through life was marked by his intelligence, selflessness, and loving nature, which touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Born on January 7, 1946, Gale grew up in a close-knit family and later graduated from Berrien Springs in 1964. He dedicated his professional life to working as a skilled diesel mechanic, a trade where he not only excelled but also shared his knowledge generously with others. His work was a testament to his character, always going the extra mile to ensure that everything was done to the best of his abilities.

Gale's life was full of love and laughter, shared with his late beloved wife, Marilyn Houseworth, with whom he enjoyed traveling and creating a warm and welcoming home. Their love bore fruit in their four children: Jon (Gayle Wolverton) Ertman, Christine (Joseph) Visin, Annette (Brian) Ratter, and Michael (Ellen Sweet) Houseworth. Gale's legacy of love continued to grow with the addition of nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.

Family was Gale's cornerstone, but his interests and talents extended far beyond the home. An avid outdoorsman, Gale found solace in fishing, deer hunting, and small game hunting. Even when he could no longer get into a boat, he enjoyed sitting at the water's edge, listening to the gentle sounds of the water. His other pleasures included lunches at Hoppers and being a phenomenal cook. Gale's presence was a fixture at his grandchildren's sports events, where he proudly watched them play and grow.

Gale's gardening and canning skills were a collaborative effort with his wife, yielding bountiful harvests that they both took pride in. He was also an avid card player, enjoying games of Canasta and Uno with friends and family. It was often said that Gale could fix anything, a handy trait that was much appreciated by those around him.

His parents, Marion and Evelyn Houseworth, his sister Barbara Houseworth, and his wife Marilyn preceded Gale in death, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories. Gale is survived by his brother, Robert (Judy) Houseworth, his brother-in-law, Paul Taylor, and his loving children and extended family, who will continue to honor his legacy by living out the values he instilled in them.

Gale's life was a reflection of the quote by Helen Keller: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart." His ability to love deeply and put others before himself was felt by everyone around him.

As we bid farewell to Gale L. Houseworth, we remember a man of great character, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a true friend to many. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his spirit will continue to inspire us to live our lives with kindness, generosity, and love.
